"Man is free at the moment he wishes to be."  - Voltaire

Why did we choose Claude Frédéric Bastiat as the philosopher emeritus for Bastiat Free University?

Frederic Bastiat (pronouncing Bastiat) was a nineteenth century French statesman speaking out for liberty and justice. Bastiat understood freedom, and he knew how to write elegantly to communicate his views. And what wonderful views! Bastiat was Pro consumer, small business, and private education; while being Anti monopoly and interfering government. His logic is presented with entertaining, well stated reasoning: read this famous Bastiat essay, The Law, for your introduction to BFU.

Did you read it? You have now completed the sole prerequisite for college enrollment as a student at Bastiat Free University.

"When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us." - Alexander Graham Bell

Learn something new, change your personal world.

If you are happy with next year being a repeat of last year, just do nothing. If nothing has changed, probably nothing will change -- for the better.

Seeking knowledge for your own reasons will lead you directly to opportunities to apply what was learned for your own good, and indirectly for other's good. Don't just go to school, learn something and act on it. Set a goal, learn what is necessary to achieve the goal, then - ACT.

Thirst for integrated knowledge accompanied by action is the essence of a Renaissance education. Knowledge raises questions that ignite a further search for answers. Your research is for comprehension, not just short term recall. You do it for yourself. If you are of a rebellious nature, good! Those who are comfortable as cogs in someone else's machine will not be interested in knowledge for it's own sake. Cogs won't create a better future. Break the mold, escape the stall.

"The risks and rewards for you from creative enterprise are greater, and of far more value to society, than illusions of security that enslave human cogs in a social machine." - Allan Wallace

   Your rebellion from the status quo;

   may create new forms,

   to replace obsolete structures,

which have stood the test of time.

"When you think of the long and gloomy history of man, you will find more hideous crimes have been committed in the name of obedience than have ever been committed in the name of rebellion." - C. P. Snow

Knowledge is the basis of positive change.

In finance there is a rule of thumb for large investors. If they own a great deal of stock in a company and notice the company has not, and will not, repair a flawed business plan; they sell their stock to protect themselves. They will then sell short more stock to profit from the collapse they think is coming. Their sales may alert others to look for problems and the stock may start it's decline.

I believe as the netcohort society takes hold our traditional, inefficient, expensive, snobbish, government supported and regulated universities must change. They have a flawed business plan for an information society. That finance rule of thumb? If something is going to fall, it should to be pushed.

Innovation by the entrepreneur, argued Schumpeter, led to gales of "creative destruction" as innovations caused old inventories, ideas, technologies, skills, and equipment to become obsolete. The question, as Schumpeter saw it, was not "how capitalism administers existing structures,... [but] how it creates and destroys them." This creative destruction, he believed, caused continuous progress and improved standards of living for everyone.

Bastiat Free University is creating an alternative learning system; cost appropriate distance learning customized by and for the individual. As Oscar Wilde said “an idea that is not dangerous is unworthy of being called an idea at all.”

Here we offer what a renaissance man needs; affordable higher education self tailored to fit the student's goals. One day, if BFU does not continue to innovate and meet our college student's needs, we will be pushed out by an even better system.    That would be wonderful.

* Unless stated otherwise we will avoid the modern confusion with pronouns by using whatever sounds or feels right at the moment. There is no intention to relegate anyone to a secondary role. Any use of (wo)man, he, him, her, person, or she can be read however you wish. One of the nice things about the internet is that we do not see each other. You may be a one eyed, one horned, flying purple Umpa Lumpa; as long as you assist us in achieving goals, we don't care. We hope to assist the family of man; it does not matter which gender, or with which tribe our ancestors traveled. Our goal is for each student to become sovereign in, of, and for themselves.

Another option is to use your own gender - as I tend to use he or him. If even this offends you; leave now before you are overwhelmed.
